In February 2004 the municipal government of Bahía Blanca proposed the creation of a Technology Pole, convening the academic-scientific community and the business sector to discuss the form, profile and objectives of such entity. After putting in place measures to promote the initiative, the Technology Pole was eventually established through a process entailing the close involvement and interaction of all stakeholders, taking full advantage of lessons learned from past attempts to introduce similar instruments. Two task forces were set up: one entrusted with all the necessary formalities for setting up the Technology Pole and drafting the by-laws, eventually becoming the new entity’s board; and the other, a technical task force, in charge of fostering awareness throughout the local community and conveying the importance of software and electronics in dynamic development.
After a series of meetings to discuss the objective of the Technology Pole, the following definition emerged: “Promote development and stimulate regional growth, invigorating and articulating technology supply and demand through coordinated public, private, academic and scientific activities with a view to achieving the better insertion of local and regional enterprises in the national and international economy”. This concise objective is the shared vision of all the stakeholders in the initiative: state, productive sectors, and the academic-scientific community.
The Bahía Blanca Technology Pole was created in August 2006 as a not-for-profit civil association by the following founding members: Bahía Blanca Regional Assembly of Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (APYME), Corporation of Trade, Industry and Services of Bahía Blanca (represented by the Chamber of Information Technology of the South), Bahía Blanca-Coronel Rosales Foreign Trade Zone Entity, Fundasur, Chemical Engineering Pilot Plant (Plapiqui), Bahía Blanca Industrial Union, National University of the South, Bahía Blanca Faculty of the National Technology University and the Municipality of Bahía Blanca. The distinguishing feature of the Bahía Blanca Technology Pole is the high level of collaboration and joint action achieved by the associated institutions.
In March 2008 the Technology Pole inaugurated its office in Bahía Blanca at the following address: Zelarrayán 114, mezzanine 2, offices 3 and 4.
